learn spanish part 1

when I'was  learning how to speak Spanish, and I always thought "hola" could be used to greet someone. For example "Hola, que tal?". But I have used it and been told by several people that Hola is only used when you pick up the phone and that I'm wrong. now this time i can tell you that holla means hello... first leson compete!
holla = hello.
